Visual Studio has always been built to target processors based on the x32/x64 architectures, and there were no versions of Visual Studio for Arm-based processors. In order to use Visual Studio you were forced to rely on emulation and while some scenarios worked there were many that did not. So I am just about as excited as I can be to share that as of today you can run Visual Studio natively on Arm64 devices! This ties directly to our Project Volterra announcement, however, this will I also breath new life into the Surface Pro X as a developer device.

Here I am quoting myself on the Windows blog:

“We’re thrilled to join our Windows, .NET, and C++ partners in building a vibrant Arm64 developer toolchain. Today we deliver the latest version of Visual Studio that significantly reduces the dependence on x64 emulation. While the capabilities of the x64 emulator have expanded, we know that the very best Arm developer experiences will be supported by tools that run natively on Arm64.”

This was a fun project that spanned multiple orgs and divisions and I am eager to bring rest of the experience along, but I need your feedback on what we might have missed and what need to prioritize next. You can share feedback with us via Developer Community: report any bugs or issues via report a problem and share your suggestions for prioritizing more Workloads.

You can find more details on our Arm64 VS work over at the Visual Studio blog.
