Microsoft is really taking this One Development Platform To Rule Them All credo to its logical conclusion and now allows developers to actually debug apps running on Linux servers, and even IoT devices. It was technically possible to do this earlier this year but it was very cumbersome, now it simply requires a Visual Studio Extension (and some configuration).
There is more! Visual Studio Code is now being Open Sourced! When Microsoft elected to open source large swaths of .NET I think we all fell off our collective chairs, but today's announcement really solidifies the case that Visual Studio is best in class for multi platform development.

I think Dev Essentials is a little overstated, in that, Visual Studio Community and Code are already free, as is Visual Studio Online for groups under five. However, you do get access to Azure credits ($25/month for 12 months), Parallels Desktop for Mac Pro, HackHands Live Programming Help, and Priority Forum Support.
The monthly cost break down probably offers some interesting opportunities for collaborating groups that are more fluid.
